A Recap of Wearsos' Talk at UTRGV

A Recap of Wearsos' Talk at UTRGV

Introduction:

At Wearsos, we are passionate about sustainability and creating a positive impact on our community of Turrialba. Recently, we had the pleasure of being invited to speak at the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) as part of their Vackar TalkX guest speakers series. One of our three pillars is education, so we are always excited about the opportunity to share our story with students and spark conversations about how business can be used for social and environmental impact.

UTRGV and the The Robert C. Vackar College of Business and Entrepreneurship

The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) is a public research university located in the Rio Grande Valley region of Texas. The university houses the faculty The Robert C. Vackar College of Business and Entrepreneurship, which promotes positive change in Southern Texas and Northern Mexico by providing students with the business and entrepreneurship skills needed to succeed. Over 90% of UTRGV's population is Hispanic, making it especially inspiring for them to learn about a business making a change in Costa Rica.

Recap of the Event

The event took place on March 19 at the beautiful University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) campus as part of their Vackar TalkX guest speakers series. This impressive event was co-hosted by the 3 departments at the university: the UTRGV Robert C. Vackar College of Business and Entrepreneurship (RCVCOBE), the UTRGV Office for Sustainability, and the Vackar Office of Involvement and Center for Engagement (VOICE).

Throughout the event, our co-founders, Lynne Corvaglia and Christian Riquelme, engaged in a discussion on sustainability and entrepreneurship. The talk was expertly led by student moderators from Enactus RGV, who asked many thought provoking questions.

Summary of Discussion Points:

  • The journey of Wearsos and our collaboration with Southwest Airlines® Repurpose with Purpose initiative
  • The importance of sustainability in today's world, and how the circular economy is a key tool to achieving a more sustainable role
  • How a social enterprise differs from a traditional business, and how Wearsos is using the tools of business to create positive social change in rural Costa Rica

Impact and Importance

Lynne and Chris provided valuable insights into sustainability and entrepreneurship. Wearsos' partnership with Southwest Airlines® Repurpose with Purpose is an example of how sustainability and social impact can be integrated into business practices. Our talk shed light on the immense potential for positive change when businesses embrace sustainable practices.

A heartfelt thank you goes to Wearsos superfan Marie Leonard for organizing this event. Marie has been supporting Wearsos for years, and she has visited us multiple times here in Turrialba. We were so grateful to finally have the chance to visit Texas! We also extend our sincere gratitude to the speakers and the organizers for such an enlightening event.
